National Central Bureau (NCB)

The national-level police liaison office that acts as a country's single point of contact with Interpol.

Every Interpol member country maintains an NCB — almost always inside its national police or equivalent federal investigative agency. The NCB is the only channel through which that country's law-enforcement bodies file Interpol notices, respond to notices from other countries, and coordinate cross-border operations. NCBs vary widely in resources and operational culture. The FBI (as US NCB), the BKA (Germany) and Scotland Yard (UK) are among the most professional and resource-rich. NCBs in smaller states may be a small team within the national police commissioner's office. All NCBs answer to both their national authority and Interpol's General Secretariat, and both relationships shape how notices are processed.
