Fugitive

A person who is evading arrest or prosecution — typically by fleeing a jurisdiction where they face an active warrant.

In most legal systems, a person becomes a 'fugitive from justice' when an arrest warrant has been issued against them and they take steps to avoid service — leaving the jurisdiction, using false identities, or concealing themselves. Simple absence is not enough; there must be conduct consistent with flight. Classifying someone as a fugitive has legal consequences beyond the original charge. In some jurisdictions, fugitive status tolls (pauses) the statute of limitations, removes certain rights in absentia, and enables additional charges such as 'flight to avoid prosecution'. It also justifies the issuing of an Interpol Red Notice when international movement is suspected.
